Abundance flows from understanding and action
When explaining the parable of the sower, Jesus said the seed sown on good soil “is the one who hears the word and understands it." Understanding, in other words, is essential. It leads to abundance. Jesus said the one who understands "bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” (Matthew 13:23 NRSV)
If you hear God’s word but don’t understand it, it’s worth crying out to God for understanding. James 1:5 says, “If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.” (NRSV) You can ask for wisdom if you see something in the Bible that you don’t understand.
Abundance, like understanding, grows like a snowball being rolled in the snow. If you start with a little, God will add to what you have. (See Matthew 13:12)
How often do you read God’s word or listen for God’s voice? Are you satisfied with the amount of time you are investing in hearing God's word?
How much of what you hear from God or read in the Bible do you understand? (Do you need to ask God for wisdom to understand more?)
How much of what you hear from God do you put into action?
What haven’t you put into action yet?
When will you start?
God, help us to hear your word, to understand, and to take joyful action in alignment with what you are doing. Thank you. Amen.
The video below looks at what Jesus and early disciples say about how abundance flows from understanding God's word.
