Fill your life with good things

Can you imagine a farmer who plants corn and expect radishes to grow?

No. It wouldn't happen. Farmers know they reap whatever they sow.

So why is it so hard for humans to figure out that when they plant bad habits that they will get a bad harvest?

Why are so many people surprised when bad consequences come from bad actions?

When your days are done, the garden of your life will be filled with whatever you have planted. The choices you have made along the way, one moment at a time, will be obvious to all who see the garden.

Some of the choices we make will produce bad fruit. Others will produce good fruit, but only for a moment.

Galatians 6:7-10 encourages us to take a long view and do the kind of good deeds that will survive into eternity.

Paul writes "Let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith." (Galatians 6:9-10, NRSV)

Reflection questions

Paul says we should "work for the good of all." What would that look like in your life?

What are some deeds you could do that you would be happy to see producing fruit 100 years from now?

God, thank you for your great mercy. Help us to make great choices. Thank you. Amen.

About the video below:

God told humans to be fruitful when they were first created. But what God had in mind was more than just humans increasing in population. The video below examines God's call to be fruitful in light of God's desire that humans live in ways that bring blessing to themselves and others.
